“We had concerns for both our children in regards to dyslexia and enlisted the services of Mel Strachan; a specialist assessor who we understood worked in the local area and carried out diagnostic reports on individuals with suspected dyslexia.

Our son, P aged 10 had been screened briefly at primary school following our concern that whilst he was bright, his spelling and reading technique was a struggle. Although the brief screening at primary was inconclusive, it did indicate that P might have some dyslexic tendencies; so we decided to look into it further.

In October 2015, Mel Strachan carried out a very detailed diagnostic report at our home.  It was perfect, because it put P at ease, in his own environment.  The assessment took a period of 3 to 4 hours over which a series of tests and evaluations were carried out - many of which I believe were quite fun.

It was a very detailed and comprehensive report and she took a lot of time to explain how we could help P and how the school could assist to enhance his learning. It has made a vast difference to P and now in his second year at secondary school and he is well supported. The transition from primary school to secondary has been smooth and the dyslexic report was readily accepted by the SENCO.

For S, our daughter, we had some initial low-key dyslexic tests carried out in house at secondary school but at the time it was not very conclusive. So in April 2016, prior to S’s GCSE’s we had Mel Strachan carry out a cognitive assessment.  We had concerns that there may be some dysgraphia tendencies and also the school had highlighted issues with her handwriting and general speed. The result of Mel’s assessment highlighted some processing malfunctions and whilst S had developed her own strategies to deal with this, it proved to be invaluable, because it clarified so many unanswered questions.

Again, Mel provided us with a detailed report that enabled both parties to work closely with the school and make a difference to S’s education. As a result, S was given 25% additional time in her GCSE’s that made a huge difference to attaining what she was indeed capable of. This assessment has been carried through to her Sixth Form and I believe we will need to have her re-assessed, should she decide to go to university. If this were the case, we wouldn’t hesitate to call on Mel Strachan again.

I certainly would recommend Mel to any parent who felt their child suffered from a dyslexic or similar disorder.  I cannot recommend her professionalism more highly; she has certainly made a huge difference to both our children’s education and future."

"Mel Strachan conducted a DSA assessment for our son prior to him starting university.

She made the process very clear to him, and conducted the assessment with great empathy taking care to explain the outcome of each element throughout the process to ensure that he understood and wasn’t alarmed by what he was being told.

Mel conducted the assessment in a completely professional manner and gave excellent and clear feedback to us, answering all our questions and de-mystifying the process.

The report which Mel produced after the assessment was detailed and thorough.  It was written in quite technical language which would have been difficult for us to interpret without her guidance and explanation.   Mel answered all questions and advise on impact of findings and how best our son could use the report once at University.

The written report was used by the university to allocate additional learning support, time and equipment, resulting in our son getting specially tinted reading glasses and computer equipment.

We would not hesitate to recommend Mel Strachan."
